Summary:

Overgrazing by goats has transformed vast areas of the dense, forest-like ticket vegetation of the Eastern Cape into an open, desert-like system.

Fortunately, restoration of the desertified land and the recapturing of the carbon can be achieved in a highly cost-effective manner by planting cuttings of the common indigenous tree Portulacaria afra known as spekboom.

The site pinpointed to the right shows a planting trial of spekboom cuttings that is more than 30 years old.  The rectangular patch of green is the restored site, in amongst the degraded, brown landscape.
